- Mrs. Anne Picket began operating Wisconsin’s first cheese factory in 1841 on the family farm near Lake Mills using milk from her neighbors' cows to produce butter and cheese. This continued until 1845, when the level of production and demand grew too large for her kitchen. By 1869, Wisconsin produced over 3 million pounds of cheese, and that number would more than quadruple within 10 years.The nation’s first dairy school was created at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1890, where it remains the country’s top Dairy Science Department.Several popular cheese varieties were invented in Wisconsin. Brick Cheese was invented in 1877 and named for its brick-like shape created when real bricks are used to press moisture from the cheese. Stage 6 Race Report: Fond du Lac Cycling
Grand Prix (June 24)
Raised in Cuba, the second day of hot, sticky Midwestern heat didn't phase Frank Travieso of Athens, Georgia, (GA Champion Porsche P/b Herballife) as he edged out Daniel Campbell (Panther/RGF Cycling p/b Felt Bicycles) in the final 100 meters drag race of the Men's Pro Race Wednesday night in Stage 6 of Tour of America's Dairyland. Fond du Lac, Wis, was once again host for the Fond du Lac Bicycling Grand Prix. Seth Hansley (VC LA POMME) rounded out the podium in third, where earlier in the evening the newly-crowned Miss Wisconsin, Kristina Smaby, and Miss Wisconsin's Outstanding, Teen, Jeanette Morelan, participated in a chocolate milk chugging contest in a nod to the Tour's presenting sponsor, Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board. Overall, Matthew Busche (ISCorp) took back the yellow and white cow-print leader's jersey with Logan Garey (Team Rio Grande) and Chad Hartley (Team GEARGRINDER) trailing by few points.
The Pro Women's race remains heated in an outstanding battle, with Jessie Maclean taking the top spot on the podium Wednesday night. In at second, with her first TOAD podium trip was Madeleine Puissant, of Milwaukee, Wis. (BH USA), with Davina Summers snagging third. Macleans also reclaimed the leader's jersey with Haskell and Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Verducci/Breakaway Racing) in hot pursuit.
Both calling Madison, Wis, home, it was Jonathan Cook (Team Wheaton Franciscan) and Mark Norton taking top honors in Cat 3 and Cat 4-5, respectively. Also of Madison, Wis, was Robert Downs (Planet Bike, first to cross the line in the Masters 1/2/3 35+ race, while Texan Jay Robertson (FCS Cycling Club) returned to the podium for the Masters 4/5 35+ race.
The inaugural Tour of America's Dairyland heads to Downtown Sheboygan, Wis. for a crit on Thursday and before heading to Greenbush for the Tour's final road race on Friday. The Tour wraps up over the weekend with the Downer Classic featuring the Ben's Ultra Prime Party on Saturday and the Carl Zach Cycling Classic in Waukesha on Sunday.
